Data-logging is a technique which uses electronic devices to collect, record, store and process measurements over time. As an educational tool, the Datalogger engages pupils on a self-exploration, self-discovery and self-learning journey into the world of science. Pupils will be alo be able to develop Science process skills through the use of Dataloggers.
The Eco-garden is set up to provide pupils with an appropriate physical environment within the school to learn about living things. It is an important learning centre of the school which helps to bring nature to the doorsteps of the concrete world of the school. It is a good option for Science teachers to carry out their Science lessons beyond the classroom. It is also as a nice venue for pupils to linger and explore during their free time. To further enrich pupils’ learning, activities are planned and implemented for each level.
In conjunction with the roll out of Holistic Assessment for Primary 1 to 5 in 2013, Ecogarden activities are planned as one of the alternative assessment for each level.
The school greenhouse project aims to provide Primary 5 students with an appropriate physical environment within the school to learn about cycles in plants. It is an important learning centre of the school which helps to bring nature to the doorsteps of the concrete world of the school. Through hands-on activities, students get the opportunity to recognise the processes in the sexual reproduction of flowering plants. Students get to experience hand pollination and germination which are two important processes in the reproduction of flowering plants. They also get to learn about the different parts of a flower.
To further enrich pupils’ learning, lessons are planned for the students to learn and to experience the basics of hydroponics. It is definitely a good option for Science teachers to carry out their Science lessons beyond the classroom. Besides complementing the Science lessons, the school greenhouse project intends to instil entrepreneurial skills within the students as they sell the vegetables and fruits that are cultivated successfully using hydroponics.
This programme focuses on achieving quality academic results and creating a learner-focused environment. The outdoor and practical sessions conducted by the staff of Science Centre and Singapore Zoo provide pupils with opportunities to learn beyond the textbooks and hence enrich their learning.
The learning journeys also provide pupils with a learner-focused environment that will stimulate their interest to learn more about science. In turn, pupils become more engaged in learning and are more likely to learn the science concepts well.
Life Science Programmes
As quoted from (Yeo, 2000), talent is the key to Singapore’s success in the Life Sciences. The training of Life Science will take many years. In order for our pupils to meet the challenging demands of the economy in the years to come, there should be greater exposure to simple research work on Life Science at a young age. Thus, the Life Science activities for the Primary 1 – 5s are specially designed in hope that the pupils will be inculcated with good experiences towards the study of science.
Pupils will learn skills and processes through the engagement of hands-on activities. Also, interest and curiosity towards life science will be stimulated.
Solar Car Programme
The Science Solar Car Race program is set up to provide pupils with an appropriate physical environment within the school to learn about Renewable Energy. It is an important learning centre of the school where pupils are encouraged to consider the influence of transportation on social and economic patterns, energy use and the environment.
The Solar Car Program is also an excellent opportunity to combine the teaching of scientific and social principles in an atmosphere of fun and excitement. It generates enthusiasm for science and engineering at a crucial stage in the educational development of young people. It also improves students' understanding of scientific concepts and renewable energy technologies.
